Getting Started with SFM-PBA
Prescribed fire is considered by many to be the most effective tool for land management. Prescribed fire is well known for its ability to promote biodiversity, optimize pasture and timber stands, support native plant and animal species, reduce tick populations, and prevent wildfires.
Missouri and national records show that about 1 in 500 prescribed burns result in legal action due to escaped fires. The Prescribed Burning Act (RSMo Section 537.354) states that a landowner or agent of the landowner will not be liable for damages, injury, or loss caused by a prescribed burn or the smoke from a prescribed burn unless they are proven to be negligent.
Gaining Burner Certification from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and working with a PBA are the easiest ways to prevent an escaped fire and avoid negligence claims.
Members of the SFM-PBA are required to complete their MDC Burner Certification before requesting assistance with a burn. See our Burn Assistance Guidelines for more information.
Missouri landowners pay contractors $75 - $100 per acre to conduct a single prescribed burn. Now you have the opportunity to collaborate with a community of landowners and land managers to conduct regular prescribed burns for only $50 per year! Friends, family, and curious landowners are invited to join as associate members at no cost to participate in prescribed burns and support the community.
Full PBA members have direct access to assistance in the form of:
Burn plan preparation and review
Burn site preparation
Complete suite of burn-related equipment
Volunteer personnel to staff the burn
All PBA members benefit from the opportunity to:
Achieve burn certification
See how other people are using fire to manage their properties
Participate in real burns in a variety of settings
Learn how to prepare a burn plan to achieve their own objectives
The SFM-PBA has the necessary equipment to safely conduct prescribed burns.
