From Deanna Pulse:

I just received a text from the organization called Nebraska Civic Engagement Table (Nebraska Table) regarding the WInner Take All legislature debate that our governor wants to pass.  I checked out the webpage for Nebraska Table (nebraskatable.org) to make sure they were legit and this wasn't a phishing message  The text related that Winner Take All has been prioritized by our legislature and could be debated as early as next week.  Please contact Senator Hughes and tell her to vote "NO" on LR24CA and keep our elections unique to Nebraska.

Seward County Democrats Resolutions:

2024 Resolutions

Seward County Democratic Party

This list of resolutions is the Seward County Democratic Party's stance and opinion on key political issues impact our state and nation.

1. We support environmentally responsible agricultural methods which reduce any negative impact on soil, water, and air quality. Furthermore, we support the research and development of such methods. We support the legalization of farming hemp for the sale in manufacturing hemp made goods and materials.

2. We believe our veterans deserve the best health care possible, including physical and mental services. We encourage legislation that makes it easier for elderly veterans to obtain treatments closer to their medical homes. We strongly support legislation granting our present day veterans the previous veterans have received such as the GI bill.

3. We promote a balanced and humanitarian approach to immigration reform which recognizes the vital economic role millions of undocumented workers play in this country by expanding legal immigration and the path to citizenship. Furthermore, we support the Dream Act and extending DACA until an immigration policy is adopted to allow a path to citizen ship.

4. We promote the protection of Social Security and Medicare. Any reforms shall not include privatization or vouchers, should include increasing the cap on taxes to fund Social Security, and should not include reduced benefits.

5. We are committed to curbing the effects of climate change, protecting America's natural resources, and ensuring the quality of our air, water, and land for future generations. We support investment in clean-energy, continued aberrance to EPA fuel-economy standards, increasing our solar and wind power footprint, and legislation that continues to actions to reduce the harmful effects of climate change. Locally we call on our public power electric companies to increase generation of clean energy, expand programs to assist home and businesses to use energy more efficiently, apply strategies to reduce usage during the summer peak and reduce our reliance on coal.

6. We support working to grow and economy that strengths our country and middle-class families for the long run. We are committed to helping all Nebraskans and Americans confront the challenges of the 21st century by spurring job creation, rebuilding our infrastructure, investing in clean-energy technologies and small businesses, and restoring fairness and opportunity to our economy. We continue to support legislation that will ensure all Americans have the opportunity to succeed and that all working families can enjoy economic security. We support the recent voter approved increase to the minimum wage in our state and support increases to the federal minimum wage.

7. We promote a progressive income tax system in which the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share, and no one can hide their income through loopholes. Capital gains, dividends, and private equity management fees should be taxed the same as wages. The increasing concentration of wealth in the hands of a few is damaging to our nation.

8. We believe that working people who want to bargain collectively need a fair chance to express that preference, and we promote the passage of legislation which would increase penalties for unlawful employer anti-union tactics, create union recognition when a majority of employees sign cards, and mandate a first contract within a year of the start of collective bargaining.

9. We are dedicated to eliminating barriers to equality, fighting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identify, and will work to engage the local LGBT community. We stand firm in our objection to any legislation that would discriminate against the LGBT community in the workplace or public services.

10. We support the continued fight for voting rights including removing all barriers that many voters still face in the voting process, from registering to casting a ballot to having their votes counted. We will work to expand access to the polls and are dedicated to promote a system of elections that is accessible, open, and fair- one that ensures that every eligible person can cast a vote and that every lawfully cast vote is counted. We stand firmly against any legislation that would require a voter provide a photo ID, as this is an attempt to disenfranchise voters and complicated the voting process.

11. We are dedicated to ensuring the next generation has access to a quality education and the tools to drive our economy forward. We support the right of every child in America to have access to education. We support progressive reforms to school systems that would ensure a diverse learning curriculum, education focused on careers of tomorrow, and providing adequate resources to all of our school districts. Furthermore we support greater investment in high-quality early-childhood education.

12. We support continued access for all who want higher education. We support enhanced funding to achieve a free public education. In addition, we support reforms to restructure and dramatically expand college financial aid. The nation should not make profits off the back of hard working students. As the global marketplace grows more competitive, we need to expand opportunities for higher education and job training. We are committed to increasing the college-completion rate as well as the share of students who are prepared for budding industries with specific job-related skills.

13. We promote efforts to overturn the Citizens United decision. We promote efforts to amend the Constitution to make it clear that corporations are not people. We support limits on campaign contributions, and we oppose corporations being able to make campaign contributions. We strongly oppose the secret funding of third party efforts to pay for political advertisements.

14. We support paid maternity and paternity leave. We support mandatory paid FMLA leave for employees to assist in caring for ill and disabled immediate family members.

15. We support family planning, including the right to reproductive freedom. Access to contraception should be a guaranteed part of health care. We oppose any and all efforts to restrict reproductive rights of any kind and believe that is choice between person(s) and their medical provider. We believe in equal access to healthcare for all peoples, safe legal recovery and that reproductive freedom is of the utmost importance in a person’s well-being.

16. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements--like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole--so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

17. We support the legalization of marijuana under a state regulated system. We believe that people who-live with an incurable, chronic, medically based condition should be afforded the option and choice of medical marijuana treatment to ease their pain, suffering, and improve their quality of life.

18. We support increased resource for mental health. Inadequate mental health services lead to increased costs due to increased hospitalizations and incarcerations. We encourage legislation that would extended mental health services to all Nebraskans, especially to those in rural areas who experience a limited number of mental health professionals.

19. We support defined Universal Health Care and enhanced Medicare for all. We continue to oppose all efforts to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act. We support the expansion of Medicaid in Nebraska.

20. We support equal pay for equal work and promote equal rights based on sex.

21. We oppose capital punishment.

22. We support efforts to reduce prison overcrowding by increasing mental health and substance abuse treatment. In addition, we support resources and programs such as job training that will keep people from entering or reentering the criminal justice system. We support the increased use of problem solving courts (e.g. drug and mental health courts) that can provide alternatives to incarceration. We support the Fair Sentencing Act and employers in our state to "Ban the Box" which requires felons to indicate a felony charge on their initial employment application.

Seward County Democratic Party Platform

This platform reflects our pride in the fact that our party welcomes people with diverse opinions. We are also proud that whatever our differences on specific issues, we as Democrats are committed to a set of principles about how government out to work and what should be the outcomes of government actions, as follows:

Honesty & Integrity

We value truth, open communication, and promise keeping, and expect these of office holders and public servants.

Opportunity

We believe that responsible governance opens doors for the advancement of all people.

Responsibility & Accountability

We believe that keeping the decision-making process visible to all people creates policies that benefit all rather than special interests.

Mutual Prosperity

We believe that the health, freedom, and financial security of the full range of families and individuals should not be compromised by policies protecting the wealth of those at the tip to the detriment of the poor and middle class.

Environmental Stewardship

Wince the health of our communities and the opportunities we leave for future generations are directly impacted by the decisions we make today, we must work to use our resources wisely and protect the environment.

Respect & Inclusivity

We believe that one of the greatest strengths of this county lies in the diversity of its people and ideas, and as such all individuals and groups should be treated as equals in the decision making process and no individual or group should be subject to unfair treatment.

Freedom & Justice

All people are created equal, and should enjoy the same rights and privileges. In our collective search for justice, no crime should be ignored because of the identity of the victim, and no criminal should be punished more harshly because of his or her identity.

Civic Participation

We foster and value the participation by citizens in elections, public forums, jury duty, legislative hearings and media exchange of opinions; these are the means of assuring that public policy reflects informed understanding in the electorate and community.

Human Rights

We promote the protection of human rights of all citizens and non-citizens, regardless of status.
