Community Science in the Whetstone Brook

The Southeast Vermont Cooperative Invasive Species Management Association (SEVT CISMA) is mapping terrestrial invasive plants growing within the Whetstone Brook watershed as part of our Protecting Whetstone Brook Riparian Zones: Mapping, Planning, and Outreach Project. We will be working with residents within the Whetstone Brook watershed to record and map invasive plants using iNaturalist (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/whetstone-brook-invasive-plants).

At this event , we will walk through identifying invasive species and how to report them on the iNaturalist app. Park at the corner of Orchard & East Orchard Streets in Brattleboro ("The Loop" parking).

On July 13th the SEVT CISMA discussed invasive plant identification and how to report these species using the iNaturalist app. This event is part of our Protecting Whetstone Brook Riparian Zones: Mapping, Planning, and Outreach Project.


Japanese Stiltgrass Neighborhood Walk. 

July 6th, 2023

This walk focused on identifying invasive plant Japanese stiltgrass by walking around in Brattleboro. It was orginally scheduled for June 14 but was rescheduled to July 6th due to weather. We walked around a residential neighborhood to show where stiltgrass typically grows, what it looks like, how to differentiate it from other plants, and how it can be removed. The walk began at the Retreat Farm's Woodlands Trail. 

Invasive Plant Management Webinar and Dummerston Case Study

This two part series detailed invasive plant identification and management. The webinar focused on how to identify common VT invasive plants such as bittersweet, buckthorn, multiflora rose, barberry, honeysuckle, and knotweed.  The second instalment took place at a property in Dummerston that had received invasive plant treatment through the US Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).  Attendees learned about options for invasive plant management and sharpened their identification skills. 

Native Shrub Planting

Saturday April 30th, 2022

In cooperation with Vermont Land Trust staff, local AmeriCorps members, staff from the Windham County Natural Resource Conservation District, and countless volunteers, we spent a beautiful Saturday morning re-vegetating a wetland with native shrubs to increase available bird habitat. The shrubs we planted included nannyberry, gray dogwood, and red-osier dogwood.
