Japanese Stiltgrass
Members of the Southeast Vermont CISMA, the town of Brattleboro Conservation Commission, and local citizens are working to stop the spread of Japanese stiltgrass in southern Vermont.
This is a new, highly invasive species to the state, and it has the potential to spread rapidly to our local forests and other natural areas. There may still be time to keep it from spreading widely in the region, though. So far it has only been confirmed in one neighborhood in Brattleboro near and along the Whetstone Brook. However, we suspect it may have spread farther aided by the Whetstone and mowing. In the next year, we will be exploring the Brattleboro area to try to map the extent of the Japanese stiltgrass invasion so we can best plan control and prevention actions.
