A death plática is a supportive, heart-to-heart conversation about death. It is not grief counseling or group therapy. These talks are free to join. Come as you are!
The purpose of a death plática is to nurture our relationship with death. I believe that by making space for death in a supportive group setting, we can more easily recognize it as a natural cycle in our every day lives.
In a small group setting, participants received:
Brief overview of death according to the Mexica
A mini altar demonstration
Group discussion focused on the theme "Death is our relative"
Flowers and traditional offerings of corn, cempaxochitl, and copal to take home
PDF with resources for further learning
Theme: Moving Through Change
Included:
A scenic walk while participants talked and supported one another
Open group discussion on personal experiences with change, loss, and grief
Theme: Love and Grief
Included:
Grounding exercise to open the space
Discussion prompts with quotes from bell hooks
Group heart-to-heart talk
Remedios for leaning into grief
PDF with resources and takeaways
