My name is Simone, or Mona. I am a third generation Xicana of Rarámuri, Náayeri, Nahua, and European descent. I live and work in the West Valley of Arizona on Akimel O'odham, O'odham Jeweḍ, and Hohokam land.
I am a death doula and community care facilitator. Using a culturally conscious approach, I hold supportive space for those experiencing an end–the end of a life, the end of a relationship, the end of an identity, the end of a season or phase, etc. I bear witness and offer resources to foster release, connection, and wellbeing.
I am committed to developing my knowledge base and skill set. For example, I am currently pursuing my MS in Psychology, with a concentration in Positive Psychology. Additionally, I am an apprentice of curanderismo. By blending all of these teachings, I strive to provide the most comprehensive service I can.
"West,
the place of great expanse,
the setting sun,
and letting go"
-Sara H. Salazar
In my lineage's tradition, the setting sun is a time/place of transition and release.
It is when the Cihuateteo, who are located in the West, guard and guide the sun on its journey to Mictlan each evening.
As a death doula, I aim to accompany others as they embark on their own journeys with death, just as the Cihuateteo do for the setting sun.
