Isolation of Photoreceptor Cells
This movie shows the isolation of a cluster of photoreceptor cells located inside the cornea of a Drosophila compound eye (approx. 0.5mm in diameter). In actual experiments, the procedure is performed under a dim red light to avoid stimulating the photoreceptor cells with light.
Fly compound eye response
Linoleic acid and ionomycin responses of photoreceptor cells isolated from the cornea (cuticle).
Fruit fly ommatidium
An isolated ommatidium. Its long axis is approximately 80 micrometers (the thickness of a human hair). It consists of about 20 cells, containing 8 photoreceptor cells.
Avoidance Behavior
The movie shows flies avoiding 2-methylthiazoline (2MT). The mixture contains sucrose, which serves as food, but 2MT has been added to the upper right and lower left. Wild-type flies (left) avoid 2MT, but TRPA1 mutant (right) cannot detect 2MT.
Chemoreceptors expressed in the proboscis
TRPA1 channel (magenta) and GR66a bitter taste receptor (green) in the labellum of Drosophila adult. These two receptors are co-expressed in some neurons.
Chemoreceptors in the foreleg
Two neural cell bodies containing the GR66a bitter taste receptor are visualized at the tip (right end). The comb-like structure is the male's sex comb.
Fruit fly apartment
An experiment to track the movement of flies housed in a 96-well plate.
