Español 1
Spanish 1 is a standards based course designed to introduce students to Spanish language and culture. The course is offered as one carnegie unit for high school credit. There is no prerequisite for Spanish 1 but the course is a college preparatory course that will provide a foundation in language and intercultural competencies that will carry over to Spanish 2, etc. in high school. The students and teacher will communicate in the target language whenever possible to demonstrate competencies in: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. We will be using the textbook ¡Exprésate!. During the second half of the year we will read a short novel called "Casi se muere". Learning language through reading is a very effective method for language acquisition, as it exposes the student to the language used naturally and to high frequency words and phrases in the target language.

Parents please check your child's agenda each day. Homework, due dates and upcoming tests/quizzes should be recorded.
Absences and Late Work
Per our middle school policy, late work will be accepted one day late, only, with a 10% penalty. After one day late a 0 is added in the gradebook. Students who have missed an assignment due to an excused absence have the number of days absent plus 1 to complete missing work. It is the student’s responsibility to check Google Classroom for missed assignment.

Students should check Google Classroom daily for class information. Parents may use their student's login to gain access. Classroom will be updated often with class information and copies of handouts. If a student is absent, please check it to see what they have missed (or will be missing). The student should also see me if they have been absent or plan to be absent.
Grading Policy
Grading Policy
The Points System is a grading system where each assignment receives a total point value, and the student is awarded a certain number of points out of the total number of possible points. At the end of the quarter, the total number of points that the student received from all assignments is divided by the total number of possible points. That number is multiplied by 100 to find the percent (the student’s grade for the class). The value of assignments depends on the difficulty and length of each assignment; average values are listed below. There will be a final exam at the end of the course.
Assignment Categories
Classwork - Work started and/or completed in the classroom. Typical value is 10 points.
Homework - Work completed outside the class. Typical value is 10 points.
Quiz - We’ll take frequent quizzes to check student progress of understanding through units. Students will also demonstrate understanding of cultural knowledge in assessments. Typical value is 30 points.
Exams and Integrated Performance Assessments (IPA) - Given at the end of a unit. Typical value is 50 points. IPA’s will integrate understanding of spoken or written Spanish language (interpretive mode), exchange of information either verbally or written (interpersonal mode) and presentation of the language either verbally or in written form (presentational mode).
Project - Assigned throughout the year. Typical value is 50 points.
Participation - Speaking assignments and daily, in class student participation. Typical value is 10 - 30 points depending on the type and difficulty of the assignment.
- Show respect for their classmates, materials teachers and all people.
- Try your best at all times. Mistakes are expected (in fact necessary!) and students should put forth effort before, during and after their mistakes. Participation during and after class extremely important. Plagiarism or use of a translator will result in a 0 for a grade.
- Be prepared for class. Students should be in class and ready to learn with all materials ready and phones put away. Per our middle school policy, the first time a teacher sees a phone, it will be taken away and a parent will need to come get the phone later that day. On the second offense the phone will not be returned for one week. On the third offense the phone will not be returned for the remainder of the year.
