Our first workshop was today at Brookdale Desert Ridge! We met up with Dolly, a resident at Brookdale Senior Living, and helped her with modifying her phone/computer settings along with allowing her to access her past pictures! It was an amazing experience and stay tuned for our workshop next week! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for SET, visit the "Volunteering" page!
During our workshop today, we met with a Brookdale Desert Ridge resident who had an interesting problem: her computer would turn off as soon as it was unplugged! We realized that the computer’s battery was to be blamed, so we’re ordering a brand new battery. We’re replacing the battery ourselves and we will deliver the computer to Brookdale next Saturday! Check for updates during this week! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for SET, visit the "Volunteering" page!
During this workshop, we were told that someone needed help with their Alexa speaker. When we went to troubleshoot the speaker, we discovered that it wasn't going into pairing mode for it to connect to a smart device. After restarting the device multiple times, we called Amazon's technical support and they were unable to fix the device as well. However, they told us that we could trade in the device to get a gift card for the current value of the Alexa.
Today, we were told that a resident needed help with her computer. We helped the resident with signing into her computer, opening her email, browsing the internet, changing her computer password, and also going to messages on her phone.
This was our most successful day at Brookedale so far! We assisted a total of three residents today. The first resident we met with received a phishing email earlier in the day, so we provided her with valuable advice on how to spot a fishing scam. The second resident we met with wanted help to see her messages immediately, so we showed her how to access all of her messages ASAP. Finally, we met with a resident, whom we had met a few months earlier, whose computer was struggling to operate. We helped clear storage off her computer and showed her some practices that can ease her struggles.
Since our initial workshops, we have hosted 11 more (Feb 2024 - Nov 2024) (photos will be posted soon), volunteered at 2 more retirement homes, created a chapter in Florida, and assisted 153 senior citizens! We are so proud of the work our team has done and look to continue in the future!
