Private duty nursing is broad spectrum care that is provided to an individual who needs medical care outside of a hospital setting. The amount of time involved and complexity of the services themselves are varied and defined by the needs of the patient served. The major goal of private duty nursing is to allow the patient to continue living on their own in the community, maintaining their independence, instead of living in a nursing facility or residential medical dwelling.
When an elderly person wishes to stay in their residence instead of moving to either a nursing home or assisted living facility, they may require senior care. It involves assistance for daily activities such as meals, housekeeping, hygiene and companionship.
Senior home care also provides the patient with transportation to keep them active in the community and to attend to their appointments or social gatherings.
When a person is referred for elderly home care, their needs are decided upon by the clinician, the family and the patient themselves. An agency is usually responsible for finding the best overall care plan for the patient to allow them to maintain their quality of living in their current residence.
Through making a treatment plan, there is an understanding between all parties about what the expectations are for each individual who is now part of the care team. Often times that includes other subspecialties such as physical, or occupational therapy, aimed at continuing or to increase the standard of living for the patient.
There are many reasons why a person is in need of private duty nursing care. The ones who seem to benefit most from its services are those which can live on their own, but are in need of additional help to exist optimally.
If the person needs medical attention, this needs to be done on a round the clock basis therefore, nursing care in a home setting may not be the best option available. At times when the needs of the patient are too great, then they may be transferred to a facility or nursing home where their needs can be met on a more consistent and cost effective way.
There are two ways that a person can find elderly care for their loved one. They can either use an agency or they can look to hire someone outside. The latter though can put undue risk on the family members or loved ones. They become responsible for background checks, employment financials such as taxes and licensure when medical care needs are to be administered.
At a time when there is so much stress being placed upon a family unit, leaving the heavy lifting and care to the professionals may be a viable alternative to handling the medical aspect on their own. Before hiring anyone for in-home senior care, you should be aware of tax laws, employment and medical liabilities that are involved.
