We evaluated the influences of habitat connectivity and local environmental factors on the distribution and abundance patterns of fish functional groups in 17 floodplain lakes in the Yazoo River Basin, USA. Our results suggest that decreases in habitat connectivity, forested wetland buffers and water quality resulting from environmental manipulations may cause local extinction of certain fish taxa and accelerate the dominance of tolerant fishes in floodplain lakes.

We examined fish immigration and extinction rates, and abundance and occupancy patterns, in relation to habitat isolation, size and variability in the Rio Grande and its tributaries in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas, U.S.A. Our results suggest that increased habitat fragmentation by human activities can accelerate the regional extinction of certain native fish taxa and the dominance of ecologically tolerant, possibly non-native fish, leading to a decline in regional diversity.
We determined long-term changes in fish assemblages, river discharge, salinity, and local precipitation, and examined hydrological drivers of biotic homogenization in a dryland river ecosystem, the Trans-Pecos region of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo del Norte (USA/Mexico). Our results suggest that decreasing discharge from the Rio Conchos has led to decreasing flow and increasing salinity in the Rio Grande below the confluence. This spatially uneven desertification and salinization of the Rio Grande has in turn led to a region-wide homogenization of hydrological conditions and of taxonomic and functional attributes of fish assemblages.

Early life history of the Rio Grande Blue Sucker
To better understand the factors affecting ontogenetic habitat shifts of an imperiled aridland river fish, we examined relationships between the abundance of young-of-the-year (YOY) Rio Grande Blue Sucker and various abiotic variables in the Trans-Pecos region of the Rio Grande in Texas, USA. The habitat associations we documented support the growing body of research emphasizing the importance of maintaining sufficient and appropriately timed flows to avoid prolonged low flows that limit habitat availability for native fish species during sensitive life stages in the Rio Grande and other aridland rivers.

We studied the invasive aquatic plant Egeria densa in the tributaries of the Gonokawa River in Japan to compare the E. densa detection rate of the eDNA method with that of the three sampling methods and examine the relationships of the eDNA flux to the upstream plant coverage, plant stem fragment flux, and plant tissue DNA flux of E. densa in the study sites on each season. Our results suggest that the eDNA methods have a potential as monitoring tool for early detection and relative abundance estimation of invasive aquatic plants in lotic systems.
We examined the fish assemblage patterns on different tributary habitat types (natural and artificial tributaries) and relationships between the fish assemblages and environmental factors in the Gonokawa River in Japan using quantitative environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. Our results suggest that quantitative eDNA metabarcoding is an efficient monitoring tool, elucidating that artificial stream modifications would affect fish assemblage compositions in the tributaries.
