Bark Beetle
Dendroctonus spp.
Dendroctonus spp.
Kingdom: Animalia - Eukaryotic
Phylum: Arthropoda - Autotroph
Subphylum: Hexapoda - Reproduce sexually
Class: Insecta
Order: Coleoptera
Suborder: Polyphaga
Family: Curculionidae
Subfamily: Scolytinae
Genus: Dendroctonus
Species: Dendroctonus spp.
They feed on the living tissues below the bark of a tree. If enough bark beetles are present, it will lead to the death of the tree.
They are usually less than 6 mm (0.25 inch) long
Are either black or brown colored
Male and females bore holes into the side of trees, form a chamber, and then lay eggs.
Bark beetles mainly attack weakened or dying trees, as there is no sap or resin to deter the insects.
They are native to North and Central America, with some species found in Europe and China.

The scientists wanted to test how the amount of water a tree receives affects the number of bark beetle attacks it experiences.
There were 100 trees tested.
The time range was from May to September in 2013.
Use arrow to see information regarding the graph:
Control- No cover from rain
Semi Control- 50% cover from rain
Full Control- Full coverage from rain
Top Row: Spring Results (May 21 - June 18)
Second Row: Early Summer (June 26 - July 19)
Third Row: Mid-summer (July 16 - August 6)
Last Row: Late-summer to autumn (Aug. 21 - Sep. 24)
Green bars - Unsuccessful bark beetle attacks
Red bars - Successful bark beetle attacks
Attacks were most numerous (36) on the Control trees, but they were mostly unsuccessful (23).
The Semi-control trees experienced 29 attacks, with 21 of them being unsuccessful.
Full Cover trees experienced the lowest number of attacks (27), but most of them were unsuccessful (16).
The amount of attacks was highest in the mid-summer (38), while late-summer and autumn only had 6 attacks.
