In Part 2, you will become certified as a GLOBE citizen scientist by completing their online e-Trainings and assessments. Through the GLOBE Program, you will learn to collect data about the UHIE from your local environment utilizing standardized sampling protocols. You will also learn how to submit that data to GLOBE's GIS database, which includes over 200 million data points from 125 countries! Students and citizen scientists from around the world have been participating in the GLOBE Program since its inception in 1995. Welcome to the GLOBE family!

Part 2 - Data Collection

Assignment 2 - GLOBE eTrainings

Please follow the instructions below, and submit a single Google Doc containing all of your screenshots to the Google Classroom and name the Doc "Assignment 2 - GLOBE eTrainings".

Instructions for Assignment 2 - GLOBE eTrainings

To complete the GLOBE Program's eTrainings, you will first need to create a GLOBE Observer Account at this link. For the My GLOBE Organization question, select Choose a GLOBE School, then enter referral code USOH96E8. This will add you to our University of Toledo organization. Then, select to join a Team, and use our Team named SEES SEIW, for which the referral code is: GLIDQFXJ.

You will then visit this site, download each Module, and read through the slides for each Module. Then, you will take the Assessment Test for each Module, and grab a screenshot of your completed assessments. Once you complete the three required assessments, you will be certified within the GLOBE system.

Modules to Complete:

C. Clouds (Required)

D. (Optional) Air Temperature - We sent you an air temperature thermometer in case you want to use it to collect data from your local environment for your research project. If you want to use it, view this module and complete the assessment before collecting any data around you.

E. (Optional) Surface Temperature - We sent you an Infrared Thermometer (IRT) in case you want to use it to collect data from your local environment for your research project. If you want to use it, view this module and complete the assessment before collecting any data around you.

F. (Optional) Aerosols - Just skim through this one. If you decide you want to borrow an AOT device (Calitoo) to collect data, you can complete this assessment. Otherwise, just browse the info presented in these slides.

Please screenshot the results of your FIRST ATTEMPT ONLY at each assessment. If you did not pass the assessments the first time, that's ok! You can take them again until you pass. But please provide us with a screenshot of your FIRST ATTEMPT only.

Please upload a single Google Doc to our Google Classroom containing screenshots of each of your assessment scores. You will have a minimum of 3 screenshots to submit (as described in Parts A through C below).

A. Introduction to GLOBE (Required)

Click on the link shown above in the Instructions. Download the Introduction to GLOBE Module and read through each slide. Then, click on the Assessment Test link and screenshot the results of your FIRST ATTEMPT at the test and save it into a Google Doc. If you did not pass the first time, retake the test until you do. Do not screenshot your final test result.

B. Introduction to Atmosphere (Required)

Scroll down on the same page and click on Atmosphere Modules. Download the Introduction to Atmosphere Module and read through each slide. Then, click on the Assessment Test link and screenshot the results of your FIRST ATTEMPT and save it to your Google Doc. If you did not pass the first time, retake the test until you do. Do not screenshot your final test result.

C. Clouds (Required)

Scroll down on the Atmosphere Modules page and download the Clouds Module and read through each slide. Then, click on the Assessment Test link and screenshot the results of your FIRST ATTEMPT at the test and save it to your Google Doc. If you did not pass the first time, retake the test until you do. Do not screenshot your final test result. You can explore the Supporting Materials for the Clouds protocol, but they are not required.

D. Air Temperature (Required)

Scroll down on the Atmosphere Modules page and download the Air Temperature Module and read through each slide. Then, click on the Assessment Test link and screenshot the results of your FIRST ATTEMPT at the test and save it to your Google Doc. If you did not pass the first time, retake the test until you do. Do not screenshot your final test result. You can explore the Supporting Material for the Air Temperature protocol, but it's not required. NOTE: we will not be using the Max/Min thermometers mentioned in the eTraining. We will only be using the alcohol-filled thermometers (as shown in the photo on the left here).

E. Surface Temperature (Required)

Scroll down on the Atmosphere Modules page and download the Surface Temperature Module and read through each slide. Then, click on Assessment Test and screenshot the results of your FIRST ATTEMPT at the test and save it your Google Doc. Then, submit that Google Doc to our Google Classroom as "Assignment 4 - GLOBE eTrainings". If you did not pass the first time, retake the test until you do. Do not screenshot your final test result. You can explore the Supporting Material for the Surface Temperature protocol, but it's not required. Note that the Surface Temperature supporting material "Interactive" may not work on all computer platforms.

F. Aerosols (Optional)

Scroll down on the Atmosphere Modules page and download the Aerosols Module and read through each slide. Then, click on Assessment Test and screenshot the results of your FIRST ATTEMPT at the test and save it your Google Doc. If you did not pass the first time, retake the test until you do. Do not screenshot your final test result.

Assignment 3 - Explore the Solar Eclipse Datasets on the GLOBE Observer Website (Required)

Assignment 3: Explore the GLOBE Observer Eclipse data page, do an exploratory analysis on any of the datasets and submit your report in a single Google Doc containing your report(s) to the Google Classroom and name the Doc.

Instructions for Collecting Data with the GLOBE Observer App (Required)

Now that you've learned how to properly collect data using the GLOBE standardized sampling protocols, you can get right to collecting data from your surroundings!

On your phone or tablet, search your App Store for "GLOBE Observer". Download and install it, and sign in with your account. Go outside and collect at least one Clouds observation. Note that if you collect your observation within 15 minutes of a satellite flyover, you will receive an email showing your observation vs. what the satellite observed! Read more about clouds satellite matches on the GLOBE Observer website.

Create a new Google Doc and describe the location where you collected your Clouds observation(s), and what type(s) of clouds you saw. Submit that Google Doc as "Assignment 4 - Collect Data with the GLOBE Observer App", and submit it to our Google Classroom.

Assignment 4 - View and Extract Data from the GLOBE Visualization and ADAT Systems(Optional)

Follow the instructions below and submit a single Google Doc containing all of your screenshots to the Google Classroom and name the Doc "Assignment 5 - View and Extract Data from the GLOBE Visualization and ADAT Systems".

Now that you've learned how to collect and enter data into the GLOBE System via the GLOBE Observer App, we would like you to learn how to view and extract data from the GLOBE website for further analysis.

There are two different ways to do this:

1. Via the Visualization System (a map-based view), and

2. Via the ADAT (or Advanced Data Analysis Tool, which is a spreadsheet-based view of the data).

Using the Resources below, learn how to use each system. Extract some data of your choosing and screenshot at least one example of each: one will be a screenshot of some spreadsheet data extracted from the ADAT, the other will be a map from the Visualization System.

Place your screenshots in a Google Doc and name it "Assignment 4 - Extract Data from the GLOBE Visualization and ADAT Systems", and submit it to our Google Classroom.

Watch the "GLOBE Data Fundamentals: Training 1" but start it at the 6 minute 20 sec (6:20) mark, which is their Section 3 on Data Analysis. The beginning of the video goes over the basics of GLOBE, but you've already covered this, so there's no need to watch the beginning of the video.
