Our team is made of innovative Cybersecurity and Computer Science students that are passionate about making the cyberspace safer for vulnerable youth. Our team members have backgrounds in coding, hackathons, case study competitions, the workforce, and teaching. Our renowned education at Virginia Tech combined with our own cybersecurity experience and the Innovate CCI research training as well has equipped us with the creativity and design thinking skills to build SecureXP.
What stood out most to us during this process was how underrepresented cybersecurity education is for young students. When interviewing with middle school students, we discovered that children are getting access to the internet at a younger age. On average, most children have their own personal cell phones by the age of ten. This is creating an urgent risk to the safety of young students that are not educated on cybersecurity threats such has phishing scams or weak passwords.
At first, we were brought together by the opportunity to learn and grow in our fields that the Innovate CCI program was offering us. After learning about empathy and focusing on what our target group needs, that quickly turned into a shared determination to solve a serious problem for vulnerable people. Throughout this experience of building SecureXP, our team found a shared purpose to make cyberspace safer for the next generation, as the modern digital world can be very dangerous
SecureXP is a result of when technology meets empathy. We achieved this balance by combining our diverse backgrounds and creativity. The character of our team can be observed by our determination to defend young students from cybersecurity threats. Parents and educators can rely on SecureXP to protect their students, especially those who have not been provided an adequate Cybersecurity education.
