Fondachello is a hamlet in the municipality of Mascali, which extends from Mt. Etna to the Ionian Sea.

In 1928, Mascali was destroyed by a historic eruption, after which it was rebuilt further down valley. Only a neighborhood was left untouched by the lava, which today is the hamlet of Sant'Antonino.

A former fishermen's village, since the 1980s Fondachello became one of the main destinations in Sicily for internal tourism, thanks to its beautiful and unique pebbles beach. Nowadays, word got out, and tourists from all over the world come to Fondachello.
Fondachello is conveniently located between Taormina and Acireale (both at 30m drive), with Catania a little further away (40m drive), and Siracusa as well (1h15m). In about 1h you can get to the Rifugio Sapienza, the highest point reachable by car on Mt Etna. The Alcantara Gorges are 30m away, and the wine-producing towns of Solicchiata, Passopisciaro and Randazzo can be reached in 50m. Other destinations reachable in less than 2h30m, so that you can plan a 1-day trip from Fondachello, are Noto, Pantalica, Palazzolo Acreide, Caltagirone, Piazza Armerina, Agrigento, Ragusa, and Modica.
