Our final week in Malang began with a mission, which was to make the most of every remaining moment. On Monday, we set off for Florawisata Santerra de Laponte, a scenic blend of a botanical garden and amusement park. The nearly hour-long drive from Universitas Brawijaya was far from dull; I soaked in every moment of the scenic countryside.
The moment we arrived, we were greeted by a breathtaking landscape, vivid flowers, lush plants, and the fresh mountain air. The good weather was on our side, giving us the perfect chance to explore. We wandered among the gardens, met adorable animals, and of course, captured countless photos and videos for our vlog. We tried some rides too, but I almost regretted riding the Pendulum because it made me so dizzy I nearly threw up (HAHAHA). The Ferris wheel and Rainbow slide were much gentler but just as fun. By the time we headed back, I was so exhausted that I slept the entire ride back to our dorm. That evening, our newfound friends invited us for dinner and a party. It was an easy “yes,” because we never knew if we’d have another chance to see them again.
Tuesday brought a rich cultural experience: Batik making. Accompanied by our buddies, Aqilla and Aurel, we visited a Batik shop and learned about the tradition, history, and special occasions tied to this art form. We even got to add our own colors to unfinished Batik pieces given to us, experimenting with combinations and patterns. The shop was full of beautiful Batik pieces, and the old house that was shown to us felt like a living museum of Malang’s history.
On Wednesday morning, we joined an online meeting with Doc Frida and Ma’am Diny to reflect on our experiences about teaching, cultural immersion, and life in Malang. Later, Aqilla and Aurel visited us with four hijabs to try on. They kindly helped us put them on, making us feel cared for and turning the moment into a fun, lighthearted experience. I already miss them! Wearing the hijab gave us a small glimpse into their daily lives. Although it initially felt a bit awkward since we weren’t used to it, still I loved the experience so much! That night, we treated them to dinner at Harmoni as a thank-you for everything they had done for us. We also surprised them with gifts—tokens from the Philippines and cute Popmart figures, which they adored. The evening turned bittersweet when Aurel had to say her goodbyes early; emotions ran high, especially after reading the heartfelt letter she left us.
Thursday was our last full day in Malang. In the morning, we picked up our finished Batik pieces, bought souvenirs, and a Batik for our dean. By afternoon, it was time for the closing ceremony. Wearing our Filipiniana, we gathered in a room filled with warm faces and heartfelt words. When Doc Frida spoke, tears began to fall literally. We shared our gratitude, thanking the Faculty of Cultural Studies, the dean, vice dean, Doc Frida, and everyone who had guided and cared for us. Universitas Brawijaya and Malang had given us more than just an experience; they had given us a home.
The ceremony ended with group photos, tokens of appreciation, and a tight, love-filled hug from Doc Frida. We took final pictures at the university landmark with Aqilla and Heechul, then headed back to unpack our gifts and soak in the last bits of this journey. That evening, we visited Hypermart one last time, then had dinner at UB Coffee with Aqilla and Heechul. Aqilla surprised us with her own thoughtful gifts and even stayed to help us pack. Her goodbye was as emotional as Aurel’s, another wave of tears and gratitude for a friendship we will treasure forever.
Friday came too soon. Doc Frida was there to see us off, embracing us with the same warmth and care she had shown since day one. We said goodbye to the kind lobby staff and began the 2–3 hour drive to Surabaya airport. Before our flight, Aqilla and Aurel sent us a touching goodbye video, one last reminder of the bonds we had formed.
Goodbye, Indonesia. You have my heart, and I hope to see you again soon.
What a beautiful and unforgettable journey this has been. My heartfelt thanks go to Universitas Brawijaya, especially the Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, for welcoming us with such warmth and care. Every moment, from teaching in the classroom to immersing in the rich culture of Malang, has been a gift. This SEATEACH experience not only broadened my perspective on education but also deepened my appreciation for the diversity and universality of learning. I am beyond grateful for the kindness, generosity, and guidance of everyone who made this possible.
This journey has truly changed me for the better. It strengthened my passion for teaching, reminded me why I chose this path, and inspired me to dream bigger as a future global educator. The friendships I formed, the lessons I learned, and the memories I made will always be part of who I am. To all the people behind this program, thank you for giving me the chance to grow, to serve, and to see the world through a more compassionate lens. My heart is full, and I carry this experience forward with hope for what’s yet to come.
