For Rho Kappa, Science Honors Society and the National Honors Society, I need a certain number of volunteer hours per year. I have helped out at PTA functions, and in other ways, but I enjoyed the hours spent making a Haunted House for the Bartlett Library the most. I was given a few empty large clean cardboard boxes and was shown a corner next to the doorway to the children's section where it would be shown. I had free reign to design it, and I took inspiration from a house picture I found online. I printed out the image and scaled it up to 1 inch = 1 foot, so it wound up being 6 feet wide and 7 feet tall. Getting the roof angles correct was one of the tougher parts of the build. I'm pretty happy how it turned out, and I liked the creative aspect of the project.
I used my mechanical skills to assemble and install a bench made from recycled plastic at a local Library in Brentwood, NH.
For the first time, I built a gaming PC. Setting out I knew that this needed to be powerful to run the games and mods in the resolution and speed I desired. I used Newegg to buy parts to ensure all parts were compatible. I chose a Corsair case because of its great and easy-to-use design. I ended up getting Ryzen 7 AMD processor with a Nvidia RTX 3060. While not the absolute best, they work great together for little bottlenecks and still have great performance. This performance paired with a 2 TB SSD turned out great.
It was an interesting project because I bought all the different components, I didn't make any new parts from scratch like my other projects. While it was easy that no parts had to be created, the build had its frustrations. When I built the computer I had 2 sticks of 8 Gb for RAM. Recently I purchased two 16 GB RAM sticks and I kept having issues. I believe the new RAM sticks to be dead because no configuration and troubleshooting could fix the problem. In the end, the whole computer build was a good experience, It taught me how difficult troubleshooting "simple" issues can be.
Zombie Apocalypse Counter Task Force ZACTF Team #426
My sister Lauren and her friend were the co-captains of the rookie ZACTF team, and even though I was in middle school, I got to participate on the team. It was a collaboration between Morris High School, in Bronx, NY, the Saigon South International School, in Ho Chi Minh City, and three of us from New Hampshire.
We built a fully functional robot, a pile of spare parts, and we were prepared for our first competition at a central location for everyone - Honolulu Hawaii! The only problem was that as we were flying over the Pacific to the competition on March 16th, FIRST Cancelled all competitions due to Covid-19. We spent a long weekend in Hawaii, and returned home after just a few days.
