The use of the Education Unit Operational Curriculum (KOSP) and the 2013 Curriculum, which adheres to the National Education Standards (SNP), shows that the school is following standardized educational guidelines in Indonesia.
Additionally, having two buildings with three floors each suggests that the school has ample infrastructure to support its educational mission. The presence of a football field allows students to engage in physical activities and sports.
It was great to have my supportive teachers, Mr. Resa and Miss Susi, who were always willing to help me navigate the language differences in my teaching environment. They played a crucial role in my journey. Observing mathematics classes and receiving assistance from Miss Susi to help with translations was a valuable opportunity for me as a foreign teacher.
This not only helped me understand the teaching methods and curriculum but also allowed me to adapt my own teaching strategies to better connect with my students. In addition, they were also concerned about my daily needs, ensuring that I had a smooth experience, from using Grab bike to go back to dormitory. They even took the time to check my lunch box from school, showing their care and support. Their kindness was invaluable and made my time in Indonesia even more memorable.
Collaboration with my colleagues is key to success in a diverse and sometimes challenging teaching environment. It was wonderful that I had a great supportive network of teachers at school.
I have written a report on teaching observations as follows.
I joined the English class with Mr. Resa. Since we entered the class and the students prepared themselves well. The teacher greeted the students and checked the presence list. Then he started to explain the material about holidays and simple past tense. The material was taken from Grow with English Book and websites. After that, the students watched the video about holidays and simple past tense holidays, then he asked the students to make a sentence in simple past tense. The teacher also used an online game on the website gamestolearnenglish.com to make sure that the students knew the material about simple past tense well. At the end of the lesson, the teacher gave some exercises to the students.
Thank you, Mr. Resa and Ms. Susi. Mr. Resa and Ms. Susi have been such supportive colleagues in helping me with lesson plans and explanations.
Here is my lesson plan with the help of Indonesian teachers.
I have learned how to create a teaching plan for the first time here. I'm very worried, but you, my colleagues at the school, have been helping me by giving guidance and advising on how to write it. In Indonesia, we emphasize problem-based learning, which I also need to learn how to do. It's quite challenging for me. What interesting math-related problem scenarios can we use for teaching.
Participating SEA Teacher project that allows me to gain more teaching experience and practice my English skills while teaching mathematics is indeed a unique and valuable opportunity. Teaching mathematics in a different language can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. It not only helps me expand my own language and teaching skills but also offers my students exposure to a different educational perspective. It was a great experience, and I don't think you'll find it anywhere else. The ability to adapt and teach in a language different from my own is a valuable skill that can open various teaching opportunities in the future!
It is clear that I have been proactive in seeking support and guidance from teachers and lecturers as I have a chance to teach abroad. I have learned that effective communication and collaboration with colleagues are essential for personal and professional growth as a teacher.
Regarding my medical condition, which means I have less teaching experience than my friends. It is important to remember that everyone's journey is unique, and challenges or conditions shouldn't define your worth as an educator. Your dedication and the effort you've put into your teaching experiences are commendable, and It is the progress and determination that truly matter.
Teaching is a continuous learning process, and each day presents an opportunity to improve and grow. My unique experiences, including teaching in a foreign language and overcoming personal challenges, will contribute to me development as a teacher. Don't be too hard on yourself, and continue to focus on your passion for teaching and the positive impact you can have on your students. You're on the path to becoming an even more effective and skilled educator with each experience you gain.
