You MUST complete all the Modules (including Videos and Quizzes)
before arriving in the U.S.
This orientation is designed to help you quickly learn some of the most important and immediate information needed to be successful here at South Dakota Mines.
Welcome to your J-1 status!
There are many types of immigration statuses for foreign nationals coming to the U.S. Each has its own purpose, restrictions, and benefits. J-1 status has sub-categories such as researcher, intern, and student. Please check your DS-2019 if you are unsure which subcategory you are in.
"In status" refers to complying with USCIS regulations (a branch of the U.S. government).
"Out of status" means you are not following the J-1 regulations and are reported.
Do NOT confuse status with a visa. A visa is a 'ticket' to enter the U.S. only. Your visa can expire while you are in the U.S. However, if you 'fall' out of status, you must leave the U.S. immediately.
