Democracy in Dialogue is a Smithsonian educational exchange program that connects students across the country through history, civic learning, and respectful conversation. Through this program, the San Diego History Center partnered with students and educators from Gallatin High School in Bozeman, Montana to explore the meaning of democracy using primary sources, personal reflection, and dialogue.
Students exchanged letters, shared perspectives shaped by their local communities, and reflected on historical and contemporary examples of civic participation. The program emphasized listening, empathy, and thoughtful discussion, encouraging students to engage with ideas that may differ from their own while finding common ground.
The final scrapbook brings together student voices, reflections, and creative responses from both San Diego and Bozeman. It serves as a record of this cross-country partnership and a reminder that democracy is strengthened when people take time to learn from one another and engage in meaningful dialogue.
