The Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station Explorer Program is a unique opportunity for motivated young individuals to gain real-world law enforcement experience while developing leadership, discipline, and teamwork.
Our Explorers are active at the station, assisting deputies with non-hazardous law enforcement duties and participating in various community events.
Many current deputies and law enforcement professionals began their careers as Explorers, and we are proud of our program’s long-standing tradition of mentorship and professional development.
In collaboration with the William S. Hart High School District and College of the Canyons, our program provides a structured, hands-on learning environment that prepares young men and women for success in public service and beyond.
As part of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station, Explorers assist deputies with a variety of responsibilities, including:
Participate in Ride-A-Longs with an Explorer Advisor or Deputy
Assisting in report writing, booking, and performing clerical tasks
Helping with community events, station tours, parades, and special assignments
Participating in anti-crime campaigns and public safety education
Assisting with search and rescue missions
Supporting Crime Prevention Unit deputies
While Explorers do not engage in hazardous law enforcement activities, they gain invaluable exposure to the field, developing skills that will serve them in any career.
Before becoming a certified Explorer, recruits must complete a 15-week training academy covering:
Physical Fitness
Defensive Tactics (Self Defense)
Criminal Law & Police Procedures
Community Relations & Public Safety
Firearms Safety & Narcotics Recognition
Life Skills & Personal Discipline
Academy sessions are held twice a year—in the Spring and Fall—and take place at locations such as the Sheriff’s Training Academy and Regional Services (STARS) Center in Whittier, College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita (North Academy), and the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station (AV Academy).
Completion of the academy may qualify Explorers for high school or college credit.
