Below are some of the resources and information that was shared over the weekend. Click on the button below to access all the files.
Terrain
As we all know, Terrain seems to be an ever evolving tool. Thanks Yvonne for sharing multiple resources related to your session. Follow the resource folder link to access all the information.
Navigation and Mapping
A great introduction to mapping activity has been added to the resource folder thanks to Wayne. There are many guides to navigation online, some more helpful than others. This one by REI co-op might help trigger your memory of the weekends session. https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/navigation-basics.html
Behaviour Management and Games
A summary for the workshop is available in the camp's resource folder. There was also a mention of the MacScouter's Games Books during this session. The PDF of the books are also in the resource folder. http://www.macscouter.com/games/
Leave No Trace
The 7 principles of Leave No Trace fits in easily with Plan>Do>Review across all sections. There are some great resources available via the international website. The website also has a link to their shop. Click on the LNT logo to access the site.
For additional resources click on the camp's resource folder.
Gamestorming
Unfortunately James wasn't able to make the weekend but we did end up playing around with a few ideas around Visual Thinking in the context of a Unit Council. Thanks James for a link to help us understand what Gamestorming is all about https://gamestorming.com/
We looked at creative ways to turn "can't do" activities to "can do" and the impact of closed vs open questions. Across all the sections the challenged seemed to be around youth members wanting to do the same activities all the time. We came up with some ideas but check out the gamestorming website for more ideas that can be adapted for all ages.
Acknowledging First Nations Communities
Our campfire chat with Uncle Ron and Nuri saw discussions around what we can do at leaders to support Koori kids in our units but also how we can acknowledge first nation communities. We can build relationships with communities and with country through education. We can learn about our local environment and how different plants were used. We can expand our knowledge of traditional scouting trail signs with the signs and markers used by first nations people or the local seasons. Here are some links for some D'harawal resources. https://dharawalstories.com/ https://www.coomaditchie.org.au/ https://www.indigigrow.com.au/ https://www.sydneywildflowernursery.com.au/edible-native-plants/ http://www.bom.gov.au/iwk/
Real Food Real Light
Thanks Brett for sharing how you introduce your Scouts to lightweight hiking and cooking. If your looking for more inspiration check out https://outdooreats.com/. You need to do a conversion with the measurements being a US website but the Beef Stroganoff is very light and very yummy.
Scouting History
Following on from the patrol scarf challenge, the information on the past groups, district and scarfs that make up the current Illawarra South District is also in the resource folder. Also included is a rough outline for Keirawarra District. If you have information around any of the districts (past and present) in SC&T please drop us an email. We would love to refine the story.
There was also a few conversations around old/out of print resources that leaders have found helpful. A lot of the old guidebooks have been scanned and are available here http://www.thedump.scoutscan.com/scouts.html
