The Acorn needs you, fair Scribe! The Acorn calls for covers - a new one every month! This is a great starting point for designing scroll blanks. Make some beautiful art that enables a last minute AoA or Fountain, show kindness to the Chronicler, and spread news of your artistic prowess through the land in one fell swoop. Contact Atlantia's Chronicler at chronicler@officer.atlantia.sca.org for more information.
The challenge for the next competition will be two scrolls you have completed. Kingdom and Baronial scrolls accepted. Sources and documentation encouraged but not required. Further information pending.
The first competition shall be a challenge to use any new-to-you pigment or tool in any scroll blank. Documentation of the tool/supply, at least one source for an exemplar, and the scribe's analysis of the tool/supply required. Scroll need not be complete. Submit entries between February 12th - 26th. First prize is a gift card for NaturalPigments.com
In our first competition, we address the personal, historical element. In our second, we address the beauty of scribal. Enter the fanciest traditional scroll you can muster for a kingdom or baronial award that is awarded before March 22nd, 2022. Documentation encouraged. Entries accepted from March 7th-March 21st. First prize is true shell gold tablet.
SCAdians share a love for the medieval, and scribes are no exception. We also love trying new things. I would challenge scribes to try one new-to-them period tool, supply, or style as often as possible. Once per reign, once per month, or once per scroll, trying new things is how we learn and grow.
Complete a scroll or blank using a style or technique you have never studied before. Diapering? Ferrara School style? Cadels? There are so many options.
Add at least one period (or copycat) pigment to your palette, whether purchased or homemade. Lamp black and Verona Green are simple to make. Non-cadmium Scarlet is a beautiful vermilion replacement.
Experiment with at least one new-to-you period tool on a scroll. Egg-white glair is quick to make. A shell for paint is surprisingly convenient.
