Guidelines & FAQ

Sample Guidelines

Bring your very own writing sample to the session!

The Basics

Prepare a dialogue sample, branching or linear.

Length

  • Your sample should take 5 to 10 minutes to read. (1-5 pages recommended)

Format your sample in an accessible style

  • Text clear and legible, using a standard font

  • Speaking character clearly identified for each line

  • Continuity notes if your script isn't fully linear

  • PDF file format

  • Include page numbers and your name in the page header or footer

Content Guidelines

We invite you to write a sample according to the session prompt, but feel free to bring a pre-written or different sample if you want!

Include

  • A note of how many speaking characters are in your script including a narrator for action lines.

  • A few lines of contextual information (genre, type of sample) to give the readers what they need to understand the script. As much as possible, keep this part short and straightforward.

Avoid

  • Avoid scripts with heavy derogatory language (slurs, abusive language, etc.) or intense graphic violence (gore, dismemberment, sexual assault).

  • Also please note: Be mindful of harmful tropes, biological essentialism and racial stereotypes (even in fantasy or sci-fi settings). If you have any doubts about something in your sample, feel free to ask in advance.

Session Guidelines

A few things to remember when participating in a group session!

Respect community guidelines

  • You will be asked to share your name and pronouns at the start of the session.

  • Standard IGDA inclusivity rules apply. Be respectful of each other's identities.

  • Be respectful of other people's accents. Not everyone is from the US or UK, not everyone is a native English speaker.

Reading and feedback etiquette

  • When reading lines, play your assigned character in good faith, respecting the tone of the sample.

  • Be patient with fellow voice actors if they are having trouble with the reading.

  • Negative feedback should always be provided constructively, and should not involve personal attacks or value judgements.

  • Positive feedback and praise is always welcome and appreciated.

FAQ

Is it okay if my sample doesn't fit the session prompt?

The prompt is only a suggestion to get the creative juices flowing. You can bring any sample as long as it meets the guidelines above!

Can I join without a sample?

Yes! We need actors and people willing to give constructive criticism as well. Plus, you can also join to spectate if you prefer.

Can my sample be interactive / a Twine / a game?

Yes, but we prefer PDF format, since it makes it easier to read and discuss.

Does my sample have to be from a real project?

Nope! In fact, writing samples are typically created on demand simply to demonstrate your skill as a writer or narrative designer.

Can my sample be from a real project?

Absolutely! Keep in mind however that the server is public, and we cannot guarantee any degree of non-disclosure.
