In The Ecological Life, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer presents in the form of lectures to an undergraduate class in an American liberal arts college an argument justifying the need to develop a greener philosophy and practice. As a moral philosopher, he constructs a convincing argument that we must and can "discover" a cosmopolitan citizenship that respects and nurtures a healthier human society in relation to a more fully appreciated and understood earth. Four of the Five Mystical Songs contain melismata, with thestrongest examples occurring in "I got me flowers" and "TheCall," the second and fourth songs that form a natural pair. (18) Theseexamples of melismata represent the general case against "mere"words. That is, the poems at once deny what they affirm. Dependent as theyare upon musical metaphors in the first and fifth poems, "Easter"(I) and "Antiphon" (I), that frame the group, they testify, asverbal artifacts, to competing definitions of form. In their complexsimplicity they are complete unto themselves, yet they glimpse a visionaryrapture they inadequately engender. Robert B. Shaw argues that Herbertthrough his plain style "scouts the idea of silence as a medium moreeloquent than speech." (19) The poems celebrate their finished shape andlament their unfinished state. Now musical realization, implicit in thepoetry, does not wholly express that which lives before and after acts ofexpression. But the speaker as baritone with occasional choral commentovercomes, to some degree, that paradox inherent in religious response citedby Saint Augustine. Singing Herbert's words, themselves intimations ofimmortality, invokes "a joy too deep for words." The Five MysticalSongs probe this "joy" and suggest a deeply-rooted complementaritybetween poems and songs occasioned by the composer's re-creation.
