Hi, I'm Scott!
I have a Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology from Old Dominion University. I earned my bachelor's degree in Psychology from Purdue University in 2016, and Master's Degree in Psychology from ODU in 2019.
Here's my research blurb at the top, but the rest of this page is just about the fun stuff. See my Vita, Publications, and Portfolio for the Dr/Research/Business stuff:
I have been involved in several research projects, some as a collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, some as collaboration within department and lab, and some led solely by me. My research fields include human-in-the-loop, human-computer interaction, automated driving, trust in automation, vigilance, explainable AI, and cybersecurity. My dissertation work was focused on the trust calibration process through interaction with automated driving systems to ensure human-automation collaboration. My other research projects focus on counteracting vigilance decrements in surface transportation, understanding driver interactions with AI systems utilizing computer vision, and developing useful designs for phishing detection systems by testing anthropomorphized agents.
Because this page would be boring if it was just a list of all my research, the rest of this is dedicated to my other interests and is spiced up with some pictures of such things. Speaking of spicy, I suppose the first thing to mention is my constant search for spicy snacks or food. Some say that's why my hair is this color! Every new place I go I like to search for something fun, different, and spicy to snack on. Not just spice, but flavor too! Music and books have more detail down below, but I also love video games, hiking, disc golf (and regular golf, but not recently), pickleball (and tennis, but not recently), and traveling to new cities.
Sometimes the speakers and headphones just don't quite cut it and I have to hear it LIVE! Here's some I've checked off my list and want to see again:
The National
Story of the year
Father John Misty
100 Gecs
The Front Bottoms
Charli XCX
Jinjer
In This Moment
Hot Mulligan
Meshuggah
Slaughter to Prevail
Carly Rae Jepsen
San Holo
Japanese Breakfast
Sullivan King
AVATAR
State Champs
AJR
Now that I'm done reading for my dissertation, I have a bit more time to dive back into other reading! I really enjoy sci-fi or fantasy fiction but sometimes you can't beat an old fashioned mystery book! Also of interest, the real life stuff.
Some of my favorites from the past couple years have been:
The Diamond Age - Neal Stephenson
Cloud Cuckoo Land - Anthony Doerr
Mother Night - Kurt Vonnegut
The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder - David Grann
Storm Front - Jim Butcher
The City & the City - China Mieville
Consider Phlebas - Iain M. Banks
Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson
