Service has been a central part of my career, in particular since becoming a full Professor.
At UC-Berkeley, I started as Chair in July 2024, and I am affiliated with the Center on the Politics of Development, the Institute for International Studies, the Center for Jewish Studies, and the Center for African Studies. I previously served as the Comparative Politics Coordinator.
At UW-Madison, I served as Chair of the Department of Political Science, the Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies (2015-2018) in the department, and Faculty Director of the International Studies Major on two occasions. I also served on the executive committee of the Graduate School. I have held multiple other responsibilities, including the selection committee for named professors, the search and screen committee of the Dean of Letters and Sciences, the selection committee for the Hilldale Awards, and the selection committee for Fulbright Awards.
Beyond the university, I was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Council (Board of Trustees) of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and I continue to serve on the Museum's Committee on Conscience. I served as a member of the Board of Visitors of the Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College from 2015-2021.
For the discipline, I regularly review manuscripts, serve on award committees, and advise on tenure and promotion. I serve on the editorial board of African Affairs and previously of Genocide Studies and Prevention and Humanity.
In 2010, Steve Stern and I started the Critical Human Rights book series at the University of Wisconsin Press; I continue to serve as a co-editor with Tyrell Haberkorn. In 2019, I helped to launch Violence: An International Journal, a Paris-based interdisciplinary journal, for which I served as co-editor alongside Michel Wieviorka until 2023. I was a coeditor of African Affairs from 2022-2024.
