The Scotland football team is the national football team of Scotland. It is currently managed by former Dundee United manager Craig Levein who took over from George Burley on 23rd December 2009.

Donovan more than made up for their absence. Playing in his first national team match in nine months, the 30-year old earned his third career hat trick and second in the state of Florida. He scored every goal for the U.S. in its 3-1 win over Ecuador on March 25, 2007, in Tampa. Speaking of that contest, the Jacksonville crowd shattered the state record for attendance to watch a men's national team friendly, previously held by Raymond James Stadium at 31,547 fans. The crowd at EverBank was the largest to watch a friendly in the Southeastern part of the country.

The U.S. needed three minutes to get on the scoreboard. Donovan took a rebound off Scotland goalkeeper Allan McGregor and deposited the ball into the top of the net to put the U.S. up 1-0. Donovan, the all-time leading U.S. goal scorer, was making his first appearance with the national team in nine months.

While the U.S. offense executed to near perfection early on, the defense made a huge error. Defender Geoff Cameron had a pass by Scotland's Kenny Miller go off his chest and into the U.S. net for an own goal in the 15th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Cameron was making his fourth cap for the national team.

The U.S. has a quick turnaround. The team travels to face five-time World Cup champion Brazil in an international friendly match on Wednesday in Landover, Md. A friendly with Canada in Toronto takes place June 3 before World Cup qualifying matches begin. The U.S. takes on Antigua & Barbuda on June 8 in Tampa before facing Guatemala June 12 in Guatemala City.

"Most other countries think it's outrageous that Britain gets four nations. So yeah, they'd love to take our nations away from us," Szymanski said, when Business Insider asked if there had ever been any efforts made to create a single British national team.

As for why no one in the U.K. has ever pushed for a single British team, and a chance to see Gareth Bale flying up the pitch and combining with Harry Kane in a World Cup match, Szymanski said that while, "The English would probably be quite happy to do that, because we're the big brother," having independent soccer teams means too much to the national pride of people from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The groundbreaking agreement consists of all matches played by UK national teams (not featuring the England National Team) in the European Qualifiers to the FIFA World Cup 2026 and UEFA EURO 2028 and in the UEFA Nations League 2024/25 and 2026/27; all matches in the UEFA Nations League Finals 2025 and 2027; as well as international friendlies. The comprehensive package also includes all matches in the above-mentioned competitions of all other European teams, including top-ranked teams such as Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

Anders Jensen, NENT Group President and CEO: "This is Viaplay's biggest UK sports milestone so far. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have exciting young teams that millions of fans will be able to follow exclusively on our world-class platform. These matches are in good hands - we work closely with UEFA in the Nordic and Baltic regions, and know how much national sides mean to supporters. Viaplay's multi-territory partnerships with rights holders will be a key advantage as we challenge further in the UK sports market. The timing is also advantageous, with these rights coming on stream in 2024, which allows us time to build our UK brand and to innovate the Viaplay viewing experience even further."

Guy-Laurent Epstein, Marketing Director at UEFA: "We are delighted to enter this new partnership with Viaplay with its expansion into the UK. Viaplay will provide a comprehensive and innovative home for the Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales National Team matches, as well as for all other third-party European national team matches played during the European Qualifiers for FIFA World Cup 2026 and UEFA EURO 2028, as well as the UEFA Nations League 2024 and 2026, including the UEFA Nations League Finals in 2025 and 2027.

Football does not exist in a social and cultural vacuum and it is in such a context that the Scottish international football environment can be seen as a location and space for the collection of shared social, cultural, national, religious and sometimes political ideas, emotions, allegiances and identities. As a place for concomitant collective antagonisms, hostilities, resentments, rivalries and prejudices, this environment is also an arena for the contestation of identities that help constitute modern Scottish society.

Spells as Empoli and Lecce followed, before rejoining Gli Azzurri, with Hibernian his last club in Britain. Lewis Ferguson has been involved with the national team since September 2021, and eventually left Aberdeen to join Bologna where Aaron Hickey had developed immensely.

Richard Gough was also in Kansas at a similar time, being named in the MLS Best XI with the Wizards but that was four years after ending his association with the national team. The likes of Steven Caldwell, Shaun Maloney, Kris Boyd, and Kenny Miller had all essentially cut ties with the Tartan Army before moving to the States and Canada.

With the squad due to travel to California on July 6th, Street Soccer Scotland were delighted with the ongoing support of the Burness Paull Foundation, The Malcolm Group and Rhino Express, who will all feature on the iconic navy blue jersey. The squad were also kindly gifted Scotland national team tracksuits from JD Sports.

The partnership with Scottish football will connect every level of the national game in Scotland and will include grassroots support. More details about the broader ambitions of the partnership will be revealed in the coming months and is part of a wider new BT brand and sponsorship strategy, to champion every home nation.

PATTULLO: No, it is. It's a particularly awkward assignment, I think, for the Scottish national team, for the Scotland manager, Steve Clarke. And he was obviously asked this question - how does he feel about what promises to be such an emotional night at Hampden Park tomorrow? And he answered by saying he urged the fans to respect the Ukrainian national anthem, to cheer it and applaud it. Steve Clarke just asked that it will be respected.

PATTULLO: Yes, of course. It really is. I cannot overstate how much the country is yearning, is aching to reach another World Cup. So much is wrapped around it. Our footballing heritage, our footballing reputation is staked on this, really - on reaching Qatar. And I think fans will think the players and team - that they deserve to get there. They are unbeaten in eight games, and a lot of the hope is currently wrapped up in the Scotland team. And I think it's - people will think this is the best chance of qualifying for a World Cup in a generation.

PATTULLO: Yes, that's right. And at least, well, several of the team won't have played a competitive football match since the end of last year, if you can believe it. So they have been in Slovenia, trying to get fit. But there are one or two players who have been playing in Europe. They've obviously been playing up until just last week or two weeks ago, so they will clearly be match fit. But there are several who are not and who have been, in some cases, stranded in Ukraine for many, many weeks following the Russian invasion in February.

Although he was criticised at the time for saying so, an objective perspective on Scottish football would probably agree with van Bronckhorst that critics of our teams should be realistic and consider their relative resources before judging overall performance levels. Perhaps before passing judgement on the managers of our teams relative to our high ambitions, we all need to take a reality check? 17dc91bb1f
