Welcome (or welcome back for some of you) to math lab. In our class I will be supporting students in both Geometry and Algebra 2. It is my belief that this lab should be a support for you to do well in your general education classroom. To do this, you will also need to show independence and ownership of your learning, so that I can properly support you.

Class Expectations

  • Respect is paramount in our classroom- towards the teacher, peers, ideas, and opinions. I will give you the utmost respect and I expect the same from my students.
  • Students are expected to behave in a manner that respects the learning environment.
  • Students are expected to be prepared at the beginning of class (seated on time with materials and ready to participate).
  • Cell phones will be allowed during approved times. However, if not approved phones must remain in backpacks or at a charging station.
  • Students are expected to be engaged in the task at hand.

Upon entering the classroom, you will move your magnet into one of four categories to help me know what supports you need that day.

  1. I have specific questions from class/topic we are learning about and need help.
  2. I need help with specific homework questions (only given if you have already completed the assignment).
  3. Ready to work on extra practice/take a practice quiz/work on assignments from the online textbook assigned to you.
  4. I have a test tomorrow or in a few days and need to do test preparation (studying notes, making flashcards/foldables, completing review guides, etc.)

From there, you will go to a designated location to receive the specific support you need. Myself and our paraeducator will support students in all four locations.

Required Materials

  • Composition notebook
  • Index cards (roughly 100-200)
  • Pencils (You will go through more than you think)
  • Colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Highlighters
  • Calculator: You will be assigned a calculator that you will be responsible for throughout the year. You will sign out this calculator during the first week of school.
  • Dividers with folders
    • I will provide you with a 1/2" binder that will be rented out to you for the year (you will return it). You can choose to bring your own if you would like to.
    • You will need 12 divider tabs for Geometry and 9 divider tabs for Algebra 2 that contain a pocket. You will use 1 tab for each unit. In the folder we will insert an envelope to contain foldables, notecards, and quick studying resources you make. This will make studying easier and efficient.

Behind each tab you will store quizzes, tests, and test review papers from your general education course. This will keep the major papers organized for you.

Textbook: enVision Geometry or Algebra 2, which will be given to you during your general education course.

Grading Categories

Our lab will be pass/fail that is made based on the following criteria.

  • Completion of assignments given (not based on accuracy unless otherwise noted)
  • Completion of quiz and test corrections
  • There will be no graded test or final exam for this course

Microsoft OneNote

This year I will be utilizing Microsoft OneNote as a classroom resource for students. It will help organize information quickly for students in addition to their textbooks and Pearson online textbooks/assignments.

Absences & Tardies

  • The minute class starts, student should be seated and ready, otherwise they will be considered tardy.
  • Fifteen minutes after class starts, a student will be marked absent.
  • If you leave class for more than 15 minutes during class, then you will be marked absent for that class. Repeated incidents will lead to an office referral.
  • If you are absent the day(s) before a quiz or test, you will be expected to take the quiz or test on the assigned day. *See me for any extenuating circumstances.
  • If you are absent the day of a quiz or test, you are expected to make it up the day of your return. *See me for any extenuating circumstances.
  • Any missed assignments or work are your responsibility to complete. See me to discuss missing work.

Additional Help

  • If you find yourself struggling, please talk with me. Students who receive individual instruction and seek out assistance when it is needed almost always end up doing better because of it.
  • Students must contact Mrs. Scordino in advance to arrange times for extra help. I cannot guarantee any days/times because of meetings and after school commitments. However, I will work with you to find a time to provide assistance with notice. This may include before school, during lunch, or after school.

Bottom Line

I am here to work with you and help you have success in your math course. I am here to listen and support you. I ask that you remember that I am human; I will make some mistakes along the way-- we all will. I will own my mistakes and learn from them in the same way I will expect you to. Please be respectful of this. Communication is the best way to ensure that you are getting your needs met. Come see me before/after class or email me, so that I can help you.
