The Kanhaiyalal Maniklal Munshi University of Hindi and Linguistics is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in India. The prestigious institution of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University (formerly Agra University), Agra, came into existence on 14 December 1953, at the inspiration of Shri Kanhaiyalal Maniklal Munshi, the then Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarati litterateur and freedom fighter.
The seed for the establishment of this university emerged from a suggestion made by a conference of Vice-Chancellors of Uttar Pradesh. This conference, held in Lucknow in January 1953, resolved to establish a Hindi University at Agra University to contribute to the progress and prosperity of the national language, where students and scholars from both Hindi and non-Hindi-speaking regions could come together to accomplish this important task.
Outlining the objectives behind the establishment of the University, the then Governor, Honorable Kanhaiyalal Maniklal Munshi, said, "This University, I believe, will promote Hindi as the national language; will usher in an era of comparative study of Hindi and other modern Indian languages; will not be content with imparting to Hindi the richness and flexibility of Sanskrit, but will also embrace the vigor, power, and vocabulary found in some of our Indian languages. I hope that it will encourage not only the study of Hindi literature but also the literatures of various Indian languages and the pan-Indian literary movements that have inspired all our literature, and will offer, through the medium of Hindi, a useful repository of linguistic research and literary achievements."
With its significant objectives, the University was inaugurated on December 14, 1953, by the then Governor, Honourable Kanhaiyalal Maniklal Munshi. On the same day, the foundation stone of the University was laid by the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Govind Ballabh Pant. Teaching began at the University in July 1956.
