The national average cost of an athlete participating in a school sport is $302, which is not a cost covered by schools. Many sources confirm the benefits of school-based athletic programs to include higher grade-point averages, better attendance and a reduction in school disciplinary problems, juvenile arrests, teen pregnancies and school dropouts.
