Welcome!
Thank you for your interest in our practice invitationals. As one of the most established and successful Science Olympiad teams in Florida, we believe we have a responsibility to improve the level of participation and competitiveness in out state. Our invitational competitions are always very team friendly and we aim it to be very educative. We believe the key to have a nationally competitive program requires as many practice opportunities as possible. Our hope is that in very near future, Florida teams will have many suce practice tournaments hosted by many schools. in order to lead the way, we will host two middle school invitational on October 27th and December 15th. We'd love to see you among us. please contact us at scioly@orlandoscience.org for your questions, suggestions and concerns.
Leagues: We will assign each team to a gold or silver league. The idea of league is to recognize the efforts of students and their teams that are unlikely to be recognized otherwise. Top 4 teams in any event from either league will receive a trophy. (8 teams will be recognized for each event)
Gold league is for established teams that are (almost) perennial state competition participants. These are the teams that are likely to collect most trophies in a regular setting. Any team from a school that placed in top 15 in 2018 state competition will be in gold league by default. Any other team that would like extra challenge is welcome to join.
Silver league is for teams that are relatively new in Science Olympiad, or teams that are operating under less favorable conditions. These teams are the ones that -despite giving their best effort- are likely to return relatively empty handed in regular setting. We believe recognizing and encouraging these teams and helping them improve has paramount importance.
Split Teams: October 27th competition will offer the schools the option of splitting their teams in written test events. Partners will be able to take the tests separately and coaches will be able to assess each individual's level. The highest scoring member will determine the score of the team in that event. This practice is completely optional and only recommended for schools with multiple teams.
Technology (Building) Events: We plan to run all 23 events and award top teams in every invitational, however, building events will not contribute to the overall team score for October 27 competition. The purpose of October competition is to introduce the events, so the students have a more concrete idea of what to study for. We expect that many teams will not finish their devices by then.
