A short(ish) video of why Galileo faced persecution by the church!
The Greek philosopher and astronomer Aristotle theorized that the moon and stars were made of pure and perfect substance and were perfect spheres. The Catholic Church affirmed Aristotle's findings as truth without explanation or proof.
Now, we know Galileo wasn't actually burned at the stake but we do know that his ideas were scrutinized (harshly criticized) by the Catholic Church. Notice the words on the image and think about what these words and images depict.
POLITICAL CARTOONS: political cartoons, which are sometimes not about politics at all, depict what we call "imagery". Imagery is when there is a person or action that stands for something else. It either makes fun of or mocks an issue or depicts something as harsh or evil.
