Cell transport

Diffusion:

  • Substances can move into and out of cells across the cell membrane via diffusion
  • Diffusion is the spreading out of particles of any substance in a solution, or particles of gas, which result in the overall movement from an area of higher concetration to an area of lower concentration

Osmosis:

  • Water can move across cell membranes via osmosis
  • Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane

Active transport:

  • This moves substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution (against a concentration gradient) and requires energy from respiration
