to be able to - describe the importance of a worldview in a story and identify different types of world views
Background information on worldviews
One of the aims of this unit is for you to develop an appreciation of the importance of imaginative storytelling. Stories are worthy of our study because as far as historians can tell, storytelling has always been a significant part of any culture. Imaginative stories still influence our lives and the way we think.
Stories REFLECT society...
Some stories reveal lots of information about the culture they come from. Therefore, we can investigate the past through stories and gain an insight into how people used to think and what they used to value.

Stories also SHAPE society...
Many stories captivate us and enthral us. Some stories move us to tears. In other stories we find heroes who we admire greatly and villains we despise. These are the stories which influence the way we think and can affect the way we live our lives.
The attitudes, values and beliefs that are conveyed in a story can be called the story’s WORLDVIEW. In simple terms, a WORLDVIEW is one way of thinking about life. Obviously, there are many different views on life so there are many different WORLDVIEWS.
the worldviews contained in science fiction texts contain the author's thoughts and their concerns.
