The Wild Robot is a science fiction novel focusing on a robot named Roz. Roz becomes stranded on an island, isolated with no human contact and surrounded only by wildlife. When Roz wakes up on the island, she introduces herself to the animals, but they are confused since they do not understand her language and see her as a monster. Roz goes around the island looking for a “master” but has no luck, as no humans are present. As days go by, Roz struggles to adapt to her environment. She realizes she needs to develop new skills to survive in the wild. While learning to survive, Roz encounters danger, and during one event, a tragedy occurs. Roz finds an orphan goose egg and must do everything she can to help the baby goose grow and learn to fly by spring. This new responsibility gives Roz a purpose.
The story is about the environment and how technology interacts with nature. The novel shows how advanced technology can communicate and adapt to the natural world, something that may soon become a reality. In an interview, Peter Brown explains, “I actually think a robot like Roz is possible. Scientists are already using robotics and artificial intelligence to communicate with animals in ways that we did not think possible.” According to Barbara Webb, “Many robots are constructed to do a single task, but there is much interest in making them more behaviorally flexible… to demonstrate that a mechanistic account of animal behavior is possible.” Roz’s journey highlights this flexibility, as she learns survival skills and forms relationships with animals.
This book offers many benefits for classroom discussions. It teaches children about the food chain and life in the wilderness. Peter Brown says, “I had faith in young readers that they could handle the things I wanted to talk about, like the harsh reality of life in the wilderness.” (7:34) For example, the story includes a moment of loss: “The ground was littered with broken rocks and splintered wood… two dead geese and four smashed eggs lay among the carnage.” (58) The book continues, “The robot stared at them with her softly glowing eyes, and something clicked deep inside her computer brain.”(58) These moments allow readers to understand that even Roz, a robot, begins to grasp the emotional realities of survival in the wild.
The novel also incorporates diversity by including various animals and their behaviors. It shows how the food chain works, with predators like the fox hunting the goose and the bear hunting the fox. The book teaches readers how the survival of different species is interconnected. The Wild Robot explores how robots can interact with the environment, blending futuristic ideas with lessons about ecosystems and survival. Although robots may seem like a distant possibility, the book reminds us that this future is closer than we think. By allowing us to see the positive way Roz the robot interacts with wildlife, we can be hopeful for a positive change in the future.
