Far Out is a science fiction story about aliens visiting Earth through Roswell, New Mexico. The plot focuses on Grandma MJ, the vice president of the Totter Unidentified Flying Objects organization, who secretly runs an underwater business. This business involves selling people to aliens, who then take them into space. The story mixes mystery and science fiction while exploring relationships and cultural differences in a small town.
The book shows how the town prepares for a big party to welcome the aliens visiting Earth. But before the event starts, things go wrong. A meteorite disappears, and Grandma MJ, a key character, goes missing. Katie, a young protagonist, and her boyfriend begin investigating. They notice that Grandma MJ has been acting suspiciously, avoiding questions and disappearing without explanation. As they gather evidence, they realize that she is involved in sending people into space with the aliens.
This story is a good choice for high school students because, even though it is science fiction, it also explores important and relatable topics. The book highlights the importance of questioning social norms and dealing with family conflicts.”Folks set up BBQ grills, chairs, and tables for a day we’ll never forget a giant tailgatebfor the space aliens. We all wear our we believe buttons”(pg 164). & “Don’t touch it, Nick shouts, and I pull back my hand. “Fingerprints”, I say, shaking my hea. I can’t believe I forgot basic crime scene procedure” Pg 22. It also looks at the cultural changes of the 1960s, including counterculture movements, hippie lifestyles, and the roles of authority figures like presidents and vice presidents. Through these elements, the book blends history, culture, and science fiction in an engaging way.
