This is a series I made in August 2020 when thinking about abolitionist reforms instead of reformist reforms within the school setting and within educators' spheres of influence.
When I reflected on them in February 2021, I realized that upon reflection, some are principles & some are practices, but they're all ways that could make learning spaces (more) free, equitable, and liberated. That all starts with being grounded in love, care, and compassion.
Some of this is influenced by my experiences, beliefs, and values, some was informed by Sins Invalid's Disability Justice Principles, and some overlaps with/was informed DisCrit, but for a more streamlined way to think about DisCrit, read about the 3 parts of DisCrit Resistance on the DisCrit: Summarized page.
Like all thinking, this is a work in progress & open to feedback, particularly from those who experience multiple, intersecting forms of oppression in institutions, like schools.
The images are posted oldest to newest. If you click on the images, it will take you to the related Instagram post, which defines the opposite of the term & give counter-examples (i.e. the way most schools are), then provide definitions of the practice (principle?) & give some examples. Image descriptions are listed in comments & alt-text in the original posts.
