I loved reading Addie Abacus' Morgan and the Forty Thieves and jumped at the chance of reviewing her next book Morgan and the Monster of the Deep. Much like the first book:
If you are looking for pure division worksheets, this is not for you.
If you have a young gifted child who is ready for an introduction to easy division, this is a wonderful book for this purpose.
If your child loves stories and shies away from any kind of mathematics, then this is a great way to introduce division.
If you have a young gifted child who is also a reluctant mathematician, this book is perfect.
If you are looking for something like Life of Fred or Arithmetic for Billy Goats, you will find that Morgan and the Forty Thieves and Morgan and the Monster of the Deep are similar in that they hook readers in with a story but Addie Abacus' books are more like unit studies in a story and contain much less of any kind of forced practice.
I have enjoyed reading Morgan and the Monster of the Deep. I believe I prefer it to the first book. It is a more in-depth story full of action, adventure, suspense, and twists that inspire young readers to explore history, science, literature, poetry, mythology, and yes even, logic and mathematics. There is a parent/teacher guide, as well as a Medallion Matters chapter to help any further investigation. As a homeschool teacher, I also like that responsibility, trust, determination, friendship, and loyalty are important to the characters of the book.
I highly recommend Morgan and the Monster of the Deep for young gifted children ready for division and/or for young reluctant mathematicians.
