Live action role-playing games (Live Action Role Play Games) appeared in Estonia in the 90s-00s, in parallel with the rest of the world - this hobby is popular in Russia, Europe, the USA, Scandinavian countries, etc.
It is believed that LARP became popular thanks to JRR Tolkien’s cult trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”, because the first games were based on it. They were organized by teenagers for teenagers, in the woods or abandoned buildings, with players often playing in "curtain suits" and sneakers, with sticks instead of swords.
The quality of preparation of games and players, their costumes and the level of roleplaying have increased greatly over these 30 years. Real manors and castles are used as locations, costumes can cost hundreds of euros, and weapons are made to order by experienced craftsmen.
Now in the Baltic countries, games based on different plots are popular - “The Witcher”, “Game of Thrones”, “Skyrim”, “World of Darkness”, “S.T.A.L.K.E.R”, “Cyberpunk”, as well as in author’s worlds.
The largest game in Estonia attracts more than 300 players.
