At Schafer Farms, we specialize in crafting the best beans.
Our organic coffee farmers get right up to the coffee plants and carefully hand-pick the cherries only at optimum ripeness. The cherries, that hold the bean, will be a bright red, glossy color and just a little soft, if you were to squeeze it in your hand. Coffee processed from ripe cherries is naturally sweet and shimmering with floral and fruit notes. As you might imagine, this can be a labor-intensive process that takes a lot of time, even on our small coffee plantation. On the other hand, it’s the only sure way to make sure that each batch of coffee beans is going to deliver the flavour you want, without any waste. Good things come to those who wait, though. We use hand-picked coffee beans from our own coffee suppliers in Colombia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Italy and beyond. It’s the harvest method we like best!
After the beans are harvested, the coffee farmer has to pulp the cherries by squeezing them to separate the actual bean inside from the pulpy fruit on the outside. They soak the beans next to remove any pulp that remains (The beans sink to the bottom of the water while the fruit floats at the top). Then the coffee beans are dried, collected, packed and shipped off to coffeehouses all around the world — to be served to you, our loyal customer. Know that every batch of roasted coffee we serve has been hand-picked to offer the finest quality coffee for you to drink!
Schafer Farms also offers a variety of other types of beans! Our most popular are our Black Beans, Garbanzo Beans and Soy Beans! Beans don’t ask for much in the realm of fertilizing. We keep our soil lightly fertilized for beans. Soil should be loose and be made up of primarily organic compost. Luckily, Legumes have nitrogen fixing nodules in their roots, which means they return nitrogen into the soil as they grow. Because of this, beans only need a slight boost of fertilizer compared to other plants. If you add too much of a nitrogen-high fertilizer, your plant will grow very green but won’t produce a good amount of fruit. We make sure there’s a good amount of organic matter in the soil, and let the beans do the rest!
Our Black Beans: It’s best to give our Black Beans the best means of growth, we allow for partial sunlight in their harvesting area. About 4-6 hours is all they need. Full sun can make the beans grow quickly, but could burn the leaves. Too little sun and beans will barely grow. Even amounts of sun will encourage growth while giving the plants a rest at the same time.
Garbanzo Beans: Our Garbanzo Beans need approximately and inch of water for a week’s growth. Garbanzo Beans have a shallow root structure, so it’s important to irrigate, especially during the pod development phase.
Soy Beans: Soy Beans require warm soil in order to germinate well. Approximately 65°F to 85°F is the recommended soil temp to begin planting beans. Cool soil will cause bacteria to grow and will limit the seeds ability to grow.
It’s important that we continue harvesting our beans as they grow so that our plants stay healthy and continue to bear fruit. With the abundance of produce that can come, it’s not unusual to be slightly overwhelmed by the fruits of your labor. All the more to go around! Beans are ideal for canning and storing through the winter months. With us, you can give the gift of garden fresh beans to your friends, family, and maybe even a stranger on the street. The important thing is that we harvest diligently as our beans continue to give. When this occurs, we like to give our beans to our community! You can read more about this in "Our Partners" page.
