Siren Test Monitoring Program
Observation of County Weather Siren tests
Monthly tests occur on the first Monday of the month at 1300 hrs.
Volunteers will monitor and observe the activation and operation of individual weather sirens. As there are over 50 sirens in the county and there are only monthly tests, it will take several months to check all of the locations. It is a one siren, one observer process. This will be a 3 season process each year.
Volunteers will observe individual sirens and report on specific aspects of its operation. Siren locations are found on the tab SIREN LOCATIONS, found at the bottom of this page. The sirens in most urgent need of inspection are indicated by XXXX in the comment section. Please advise the AEC SKYWARN or the EC of your selection.
Volunteers are needed in each of the four fire districts of the county.
An Amateur Radio Net will be activated to poll for Inspection Reports. Net Control will also monitor the SCC Siren Test GroupMe site for participating non-ham SkyWarn Siren Observers. Reports will be compiled and noted on the website spreadsheet.
Siren Inspection and Net Procedures
Those volunteers that have indicated their availability for service will be assigned a siren location for the current month.
The proposed location assignments will be indicated on the Siren Locations spreadsheet (see button below).
The Siren Test Net will be up for check-ins by 1245 hrs. The designated repeater for the net will be the AA8K 146.720 (pl 186.2) . When southern county sirens are involved the repeater will be K8SCC 147.320 (pl 131.8). Or, all county repeaters may be activated thru the Link All repeater option.
Those performing inspections will check-in by 1250, indicating their location by ID# and Siren Nickname.
Notes will be made of any Damage (to the structure or siren device) and Vegetation (that may impede siren operation).
The siren should trip at 1300 Hrs and continue to sound for 3 full minutes. Siren must rotate freely for the entire activation period. Stationary sirens will be indicated on the spreadsheet.
After the sirens have sounded, the NCS will poll stations for reports. Reports will include a Pass/Fail for the criteria (in order): Sound, Rotation, and vegetation and/or Damage. Following each report, the observer will be excused from the net.
NCS will Forward the net report to the EC & the AEC/Skywarn.
