Springfield Conservation And Nature Stewardship (SCANS) is a non-profit organization that works to preserve, steward, and advocate for Springfield’s natural resources, woodlands, waterways.

This website is for submission of images and information about its storm drain art painting project called:



DownStream Art has launched a public art initiative with an environmental message for Springfield.

"Painting a mural on the street? What's the use of that?" you might wonder.

The use:  Storm drain murals educate us about the connectivity between the drains and our waterways. And of each of us needing to take part in keeping that water clean.

A painted storm drain reminds us that what goes into the drain ends up, untreated, in places like Lake Massasoit, downstream to the Connecticut River, far down into the Long Island Sound.

When people make the storm drain-river connection, they are more likely to help keep the drains clean. Images of those murals often help us understand the best:
