The South Carolina Energy Justice Coalition is a nonpartisan collective of over 70 organizations across the four regions of South Carolina working to support communities experiencing high energy burdens, persistent energy inefficiency, and other inequities in the SC energy system.
The mission of the SC Energy Justice Coalition is to embed fairness into South Carolina's energy system while remediating harms
We lead with justice, compassion, and resilience. Our belief is that investments in renewable energy solutions that boost the economy, create high-wage jobs, promote health, and protect our homesteads are the best path forward.
OUR 2025 LEGISLATIVE AGENDA WILL BE PUBLISHED SOON!
Forged by Coalition Lobbyist, Zakiya Esper, our connections with policymakers form the cornerstone of successful advocacy efforts
Black, and other People of Color communities bear the brunt of the environmental crisis. Communities of Color have been systemically targeted and generationally harmed by the negative and far-ranging impacts of climate degradation.
For this "shorter" legislative session, our Coalition of conservationists is focused on stopping harmful House Bill H.5118, working with legislators to reject the construction of a new gas plant in the vulnerable Canadys community, reducing energy burden in our most marginalized communities, appointing a Third Party utilities administrator, and mapping relationships with legislators and policymakers.
Coalition members and community partners help influence our advocacy ensuring we reach and serve our frontline communities.
Our ask is that policymakers appoint a Third Party Administrator to helps shape energy efficiency programs, obtaining savings for overburdened utilities customers
We are urging lawmakers to reject a planned gas plant which will risk the economy, public health, and regulatory processes for decades to come
Reducing energy burden, which is defined as the percent of household income spent on heating and cooling a home, remains a central focus of our collective work. Energy burden is a key indicator of energy justice as households that cannot afford power face life-threatening situations
SC's lawmakers are our partners in smart policy. We feel that building meaningful relationships with legislators is an important aspect of advocacy. Our legislator relationships will provide opportunities to work more closely with them to get bills introduced, shape debates, and eventually pass common sense energy legislation
