Each week at our activities, we do a little (or sometimes, a lot) of writing. Here are some of our favorite writing prompts, activities, and games.
At the Involvement Fair, we played a writing game to create a campus-wide story. Anyone who participated added one sentence to this story, but they could only see the previous sentence, and not the beginning or anything else that came earlier in the story.
On his way to the library, Wolfie met his friend.
Wolfie's friend, Mr. George, was feeling sad.
The cake factory an avenue away had exploded.
All the rich minerals spilled onto the street.
One man from the crowd shouts "EAT THE RICH!"
Another man pulls out a sword and attacks the man.
The first man proceeds to implode into a black hole.
The second man then calls a UN security council emergency meeting.
The third man sets a building on fire.
He drinks beer and drives in his Tesla.
He rides to the library, and the beer spills on the library book.
He wonders how to return the book so no one will notice.
He buries the book underneath some endangered plants.
He proceeds to water those plants with Coca-Cola.
It was not until late afternoon that he realized the sanctity of such an act.
This piece comes from our first GBM of the semester.
Background: Mass is in session in a dark gothic church. Two girls, one in prayer, the other clearly disinterested, sit in the pews. Andrew Neiman (from the movie Whiplash) is also there. James Rayner, a “space Southerner” fighting a revolutionary war against aliens, walks into the church.
James - “Howdy, name’s James Rayner. I’m hunting vampires right now.”
The disinterested girl, secretly a vampire, is freaking out internally.
Andrew - “Who are you and why are you wearing metal armor to church?”
James - “Originally I was here to hunt the Zerg, but vampires are the closest thing in this dimension.”
Vampire - “Wow, so you’re just hunting down vampires because they’re vampires. That’s so racist.”
The praying girl butts in. “Oh, you can’t judge him for that. He’s from the Universal South!”
Andrew - “I don’t know anything about vampires, but my music teacher is probably from the South so he could help you.”
Fletcher, who is playing the church’s organ, turns his head.
James - “Well the Zerg, they’re not a force to be reckoned with. Neither are the vampires. Have you seen their ugly fangs?
Andrew - “I feel like I’m stepping into business which I should have nothing to do with.”
Based on an exercise in which we created characters who would have a connection to each other’s mosaics.
This Mosaic was created by Steve from Minecraft. Held with the green and red on the bottom, those colors represent the grass and plants such as flowers and berries respectively, or the blood of life. The top, meanwhile, is reminiscent of the sky, both on clear and cloudy days, representing the ups and downs of life. Lastly, the clear in the middle acts as a centerpiece.
