Southern Appalachian Weather and Climate Workshop Abstract Submission
Welcome to the 2026 SAWC Workshop
The Southern Appalachian Weather and Climate Workshop brings together a diverse group of federal, academic, students, and broadcast media to share research, operations, and communication of weather, water, and climate events. The workshop is interested in a broad range of abstracts concerning weather and climate, and do not necessarily need to be focused on the southern Appalachians.
Keynote Speaker
Monica Youngman, Chief Scientist NOAA/NWS
Monica Youngman is the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) Chief Scientist. She serves as the NWS AI Program lead, co-chair of the NOAA AI Executive Committee, and member of the AMS AI Ethics & Policy Committee. In NWS Monica champions AI projects throughout the weather and water value chain and fosters partnerships across the government, academic, and private sectors to advance the NWS mission. Over the last 16 years in NOAA Monica has focused on data science research and development of innovative decision support tools. Monica has a Masters in Environmental Management with a focus on Environmental Economics from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, as well as Bachelor’s degrees in physics and political science from Iowa State University.
The Workshop starts Friday afternoon and continues all day Saturday. Friday and Saturday are filled with oral and poster presentations from a broad range of topics in weather, water and climate. Of course there will be plenty of opportunity for asking questions and engaging the operational and academic communities.
