Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Rationale
For my picture book unit, I chose the book The Cat in the Hat. This is a very known children’s literature book that helps explain how important order is with chaos. By creating this picture book unit, I can connect my teachings to those of a competent teacher by connecting to the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard number 6.
6F) recognizes the relationships among reading, writing, and oral communication and understands how to integrate these components to increase content learning;
During my lesson plans, I demonstrated different ways to understand the text and how to break down the text as a group, through poetry and relating the text to the students own personal experiences. Having the students analyze the text and overall become better with analyzing literature within the learning component.
6I) knows appropriate and varied instructional approaches, including those that develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas.
I have different forms of understanding the literature through many different literature assignments, through my pre literature assignments I have a word search to introduce the literature to the students. The post literature plan has the rhyme activity so the students can analyze the book and apply their own knowledge towards the assignment. Lastly, the post assignment I will give a exit slip to see the students comfortably and to understand what changes I have to make to help the students better understand the content within the book.
6L) facilitates the use of appropriate word identification and vocabulary strategies to develop each student’s understanding of content;
I use different teaching methods along with different word identification worksheets and activities to have the students understand the content better as the students leave the class, a exit slip will be given to the students to understand the students comfortably level and as a teacher I will have to adjust to the different teaching methods needed for the students.
Rationale
This picture unit was created to help students learn about different forms of literature throughout this lesson. The students will apply the knowledge that was taught from the lessons to their everyday life with word comprehension, poetry and using their own life to assignments effectively. By the students reading the literature and breaking the literature down piece by piece the students will be able to apply that information to the assignments given to them. The student completing the different assignments from the Pre-During and Post assignments the students will hopefully gain more knowledge and I will be able to know from an exit slip. The students understanding the content and applying that knowledge to future assignments and in real life scenarios I believe is one of the keys to being a good teacher and making sure the students are only becoming better as they progress in the classroom
