Evolution
The two current subspecies of red panda are the Himalayan (fulgens) and the Chinese (styani) red panda which genetically diverged about 250,000 years ago. The fulgens red panda was the first to be discovered and was officially named ailurus from the greek word ailouros which means cat and then fulgens which means fire-colored or shining. On the other hand, the ailurus styani is slightly larger and often brighter colored than the Himalayan red panda. The genetic makeup of the red panda has also evolved to help it survive in its high altitude climate. Furred paw pads have allowed for better gripping of trees and logs, where they spend most of their lives. Additionally, the fur helps them stay warm as their rainforests are cold for the majority of the time.
Five million years ago, their ancestors roamed North America according to their fossils. With studies showing they are probably most closely related to racoons, weasles, and skunks, with additional key evolutionary changes to help them eat. They developed a special dental morphology with blunted cusps which creates an effective way to grind and process plant material. As stated in our home page, the red panda is now categorized in their own animal family group known as the Ailuridae.
