The Lithgow SAF Museum, located in the Central West region of NSW, Australia, urgently needs heritage protection for its highly significant site and the honouring of previous commitments to transfer the site to the Museum. This will enable the Museum to continue its mission to preserve and share its unique collection and UNESCO Listed archives. As the birthplace of high-precision manufacturing in Australia, the site is an integral part of this important living museum.
The Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum is too important for Australia to lose. We’re still fighting for a secure future, and while site ownership and other hurdles mean we can’t fully reopen yet, we believe this Museum is worth every effort.
That’s why we’re reopening in phases. Right now, in Phase 2, you can visit during our limited set opening hours — Tuesdays & Thursdays (10 am–4 pm) and Saturdays (10 am–2 pm). Each visit is a “Supporters Admission”, helping keep the Museum going as we continue rebuilding and work toward restoring the full experience.
By visiting now, you’re not just seeing what we currently offer - you’re helping ensure the Museum has a future.
During Phases 1 & 2, visiting the Museum is less about the full museum experience and more about supporting our journey to rebuild.
Opening hours:
Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am-4pm
Saturdays 10 am to 2 pm
Due to circumstances beyond our control there are no firearms on display, but we do have history exhibits and the General Machine Shop, which houses our historic machinery collection., and where we are working to recreate the sections of the working factory floor.
The museum shop is open during hours.
We’re looking for volunteers to staff admissions and the museum shop, and to guide visitors. If you’d like to help, please contact us.
