The Lithgow SAF Museum, located in the Central West region of NSW, Australia, urgently needs heritage protection for its highly significant site and the honouring of previous commitments to transfer the site to the Museum. This will enable the Museum to continue its mission to preserve and share its unique collection and UNESCO Listed archives. As the birthplace of high-precision manufacturing in Australia, the site is an integral part of this important living museum.
The Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum is too important for Australia to lose. We’re still fighting for a secure future, and while site ownership and other hurdles mean we can’t fully reopen yet, we believe this Museum is worth every effort.
That’s why we’re reopening in phases. Right now, in Phase 1, you can visit by appointment within our set opening hours - Tuesdays & Thursdays (10 am - 4 pm) and Saturdays (10 am - 2 pm). Each visit is a “Supporters Admission", keeping the Museum alive while we rebuild and work towards bringing back the full experience. By visiting now, you’re not just seeing what we currently offer - you’re helping ensure the Museum has a future.
At this stage, visiting the Museum is less about the full museum experience and more about supporting our journey to rebuild.
By appointment only - phone on arrival during hours to arrange a visit
Opening hours:

There are no firearms on display, but we do have history exhibits (work in progress) and the General Machine Shop, which houses our historic machinery collection, and where we are working to recreate the sections of the working factory floor.
The museum shop will be open during visits by appointment.
As upgrades progress, we will begin adding selected antique and sectioned firearms for display.
We’re looking for volunteers to staff admissions and the museum shop, and to guide visitors. If you’d like to help, please contact us.

In Phase 2, the Musuem will move to set open hours, with volunteers running the shop and guiding visitors during opening hours. By then, our rebuilding will be further along and the first antique and cut-away firearms will be on display.
While we complete the security upgrades during Phase 2, we're preparing to bring the full firearms displays back refreshed and even better than before for the Museum's full reopening.
